Another idea is to assign the homework and tell the kids that you will choose one row randomly on the given day to account for homework completion. If everyone in that row has completed the homework, the class gets the bonus points. If someone in the chosen row has not completed the homework, no bonus points for anyone. You could accumulate these points and award them at the end of the week/month, etc. You could also choose a day to deduct points if the chosen row doesn't have 100% homework completion. Having the chosen row be a random thing helps keep students motivated since they don't know if they will be chosen. - Ann
One thing that's worked for me is to use the laptops. Students who are not inclined to complete homework or even classwork, will do an assignment on the laptops, especially if they know that their classmates will see it. - Julie
Cooperative groups - if everyone does the assignment they are awarded points and/or extra credit. Peer pressure is applied within the group.- Cathy B.
Competitive games to win extra credit. Students only receive extra credit if all assignments are turned in. - Hilary R. Game ideas
Homework quiz instead of collecting homework. Students who have a low quiz score have the opportunity to turn in the assignment for credit. - Barbara H.
Turn in file on-line rather than paper copies. - Matt U.
Make all homework assignments relevant and worth valuable points...they'll do it...I also allow one Free HW to be exchanged for extra credit at the end of the marking period if they don't use the freebie. - Mad k
I only assign one major hw assignment per chapter. Fewer assignments can make the homework seem more valuable. When we go over it (whether or not the student did the HW) they are responsible for a correct answer, even if that means that I tell them what page in the book they could find the answer & they get back to us. Students are called upon randomly ~ drawing from popsicle sticks inside a beaker with their name on it. Audrey
